Today’s Devotional Is THE FRUIT of the SPIRIT SELF CONTROL

Paul must have loved sport in his early years of life! He uses the terms for the boxer, the gymnast, and the racer. He probably stood many times to watch the great games that were held around the world in the Greek-speaking countries. He was familiar with the difficult and long training that competitors had to go through.

Paul was participating in a race to win an imperishable wreath. He was certain of his goal and did not run in doubt. He was as straight as an arrow, to his target. His mark was to win souls to Christ. His passion was to gain others, and save some (1Co_9-22). He had to be disciplined, leaving behind all that was innocent and allowing others to enjoy it without any repercussions (Rom_14.13-21). His own body was the antagonist. The Apostle also participated in a boxing match. He was aware that spiritual power existed for him to acquire in Christ. However, to possess it, he had to be a spiritual man. To do that, he had to subdue his fleshly cravings.

Self-responsibility, self-knowledge and self-control are essential. It is better to surrender all of your nature to God and ask Him for direction, control, suggestions, and guidance each day. It’s infinitely better to follow Christ than be self-controlled. Happy are those who, from an early age, are able to subordinate all the pleasures of their senses to a higher quest of the spirit. Because he must be able move quickly from one place to another, the soldier will have to give up many legitimate civilian possessions. The soldier must give up many comforts but is compensated if his name appears on the honors list. He must endure extreme weather conditions and other discomforts in order to reap the benefits of his labor. They may deny themselves for less, but we have an infinitely greater object in mind; so much more should we let go of every weight. Keep in mind Jesus Christ, the Risen Savior and Life-giver, who is the source of all spiritual power.

PRAYER for Today

Heavenly Father, Engraft Thy Son Jesus Christ my Lord inwardly in mine heart, so that I may bear the fruit of holy living to the glory and praise of Thy name. AMEN.
