Daily Scripture Reading: Acts 2:17 KJV

Acts 2:17 KJV
(17)  And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Today’s Devotional Is THE PROMISE OF HOLY SPIRIT

In his sermon on the Day of Pentecost the Apostle Peter quoted the last part of the prediction made by the Prophet (Joe_228:28). We don’t know much about this prophet, who lived probably in Judah under the reign of Uzziah. His anticipation of the outpourings of the Divine Spirit was fulfilled in the memorable scenes that saw the birth of the Christian Church.

The Holy Spirit had not yet descended upon the elect of the Hebrew race before the Day of Pentecost. In those days, the supreme gift from God was reserved for the spiritual aristocracy in Israel. It was for men who were called to high office and responsibility as prophets, kings, or leaders. Joel stated that the Holy Spirit, which had been reserved for the elite, would soon be available to all–the young men would prophesy and even the most disregarded classes would benefit from the Divine experience.

Whatever Pentecost means, it is open to all. “Everyone of you,” said St. Peter “will receive the gift of Holy Ghost.” This promise is for you, your children, as well as all those who are far away, as well as to the Lord our God (Act_2:38-40). This is something we should all take to heart.

Electricity was once a privilege reserved for the wealthy. But electricity is now available to all, and even the poorest child or boy can use it. Scientists and inventors boast that they are able bring the benefits of their discoveries within reach of all. Pentecost is a similar event in that the Eternal Spirit’s gifts and forces are now available to the weakest of hands who reach out to grab them. Before God can give us our share of the Gift He made for the Church once, we must first cleanse our hearts and stop craving righteousness.

PRAYER for Today

Let Thou Holy Spirit dwell within me always, and make me Thy temple. AMEN.
