Today’s Devotional Is GOD’S THOUGHTS OF ME

HAGAR WAS an Egyptian slave girl, raised amid Egyptian idolatries and with no idea that the gods could have any personal interest in such a small amount of human atoms as she was. She would have likely heard about Jehovah in Abraham’s campment, but she would probably think of Him as equally beyond the boundaries of her small life. As Sarah was attempting to kill her, Sarah’s harsh treatment made it clear that she was not worthy of the God she had entrusted with her life. In her despair, she suddenly heard the voice from the Angel-Jehovah and called Him “The Living One Who Seeth Me”.

The thought gave her inspiration and comfort. She was able to return to Sarah and give her consent. These words, however, have been used to bring about fear and judgement for many. They thought God was watching over their sinful ways and shrank from the idea of His eye seeing them. This thought is not what these words mean, but it does show that we cannot wander off into the far country or walk in solitude without God our Father’s tender notice. He notices every sparrow that falls on the ground.

When he wrote the 139th Psalm, the Psalmist thought the same thing. He says, “God knows his downsitting, his uprising,” and that His Almighty Friend is all that he has in his thoughts and ways. This is in a tone that is filled with rapturous gladness. It is a prerogative to be friends and love the thought and presence of a friend. The crowning characteristic of Christianity, however, is that we are invited into personal friendship with the Lord. He can see our thoughts from far away. He is quick to sympathize with our worries and discouragements. He is always there to help us, wherever we go. Every reader should open the door to this great friend, and remember that obedience is His only test: “Yetie are My friends, if you do what I command.” This will make His presence the joy of your life (Rev_3.20).
