Daily Scripture Reading Matthew 6:21-22
Matthew 6:21-22 KJV
(21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
(22) The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
Today’s Devotional Is The Divided Heart
In Matthew 6, we find several instances of a divided heart. Jesus warns us that our heart will follow where our treasure is. If we have a single focus, our whole body will be full of light. On the other hand, a double-minded person is unstable in all their ways.
Many of us struggle with a divided heart. Anxiety can divide our attention, preventing us from taking a strong, straight course. We may also feel torn between being Christlike and gracious or distant and angular. Some of us struggle with fitful and passionate impulses that are difficult to control. St. Paul and St. Augustine both confessed to being aware of these two wills within them.
A divided heart lacks strength and stability. Those who leave their mark on the world are those who can say, “This one thing I do.” But we need more than concentration; we need consecration. We must not only be united in ourselves, but we must also be united in God. Let us pray that God will knit our hearts to Him so that we may fear His name. By yielding ourselves to God, He will disunite us from the world and weave us into His own life.
