Daily Scripture Reading: Psalm 1:1-2 KJV
Psalm 1:1-2 KJV
(1) Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
(2) But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Today’s Devotional Is CHRIST’S TEACHINGS ABOUT BLESSEDNESS
OUR LORD lived in the City of Blessedness. He revealed to all the men, in Mat_5-12, the eight gates through which this City can be entered. For me, the Gate of Poverty of Spirit is not a good option. I also cannot enter by the Gate of the Mourners because I am not humble enough. I’m not grieved enough about my sins and those of others. I can’t go in through the Gate of the Meek because I often resent injury. I can’t get in through the Gates of Mercy or Purity or Peace. However, I might claim that I can enter through the fourth Gate because I hunger and thirst for righteousness. As I enter, I am surrounded by holy souls who have also entered through the other gates. To enter the Heavenly City by any gate is equivalent of having entered through all of them; the Holy Spirit will eventually grant each grace the ability to access all the others.
What is Blessedness? It is a state or condition of the heart, according to the Lord. Except for reproach or persecution, outward circumstances are not mentioned. Blessedness does not depend on our external circumstances, be they rich or poor, prosperous or perplexed. Blessedness starts and ends with a contented recognition and appreciation of Christ’s Royalty; in the power to see the good in all things, and so inherit the earth; and in being satisfied in receiving mercy and in being called God’s sons and daughters. It is worth your time to try to get in at these wide-open gates. If you can honestly say you yearn for better things, if this is the true purpose of your life, then you might be admitted to the Gates of the Blessed Life.
It is not possible to believe that Our Lord gave the blessing of Blessedness to those who possess certain attributes in accordance with an arbitrarily granted royal prerogative. He only declared the truth in the very nature and essence of things. To be pure, meek, merciful, and true is to possess the seed-germs for the harvest of Blessedness. You will find all the listed qualities in the fruit of God’s Spirit if you move from this amazing enumeration to Gal_5/22. We pray that He will work in and through us a balanced and fully-orbed Christian character.
PRAYER for Today
Lord, speak through my lips; grab my mind and think about it; and take my heart and light it. AMEN.
