Daily Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:18-19 KJV
Matthew 4:18-19 KJV
(18) And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
(19) And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Today’s Devotional Is FISHERMEN
It is so that Christ adapts Himself for the understanding and heart. These fishermen were caught by Christ using the right bait for them. Notice how certain He is in His promise to make these brothers fishermen of men. They cast their drag-nets not into the waters off Galilee but into the vast ocean of humanity. It would have been impossible to convince Peter that he would be able to gather three thousand souls in four years (Act_2:41). It is impossible to know what we will find when we follow the Master’s call and leave everyone else behind.
“Follow Me!” This is the challenge that our Lord Jesus Christ faces (Joh_21.19-22). It involves bearing the cross. However, it also means that we must follow Christ until we, like Him in the end, fall to the ground and die to our ambitions, power and influence, and our gifts. This will allow God to work through our lives. It is important to learn to not be too visible, but to hide. First, second, and third conditions are necessary for successful fishing. The best bait and line for catching men is those that are hidden from view. Our goal is to glorify Christ and serve His purpose.
It must happen that nets and boats are removed from our lives, even those we love the most (Mat_4;20-23). These brothers must have felt a bit strained to give up fishing and nets to follow Christ. The attraction to His Personality won out. If you are able to show men the enormous value of the Pearl of great cost, it is not difficult to persuade them to give up the inferior and lower articles. They will then be willing to sell everything they own in order to purchase it.
