Bible Verses about Martha and Mary
Luke 10:38-42 KJVÂ
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. (39) And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. (40) But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. (41) And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: (42) But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
As we read the Bible, we see that Mary and Martha were very different from each other. Martha was a busy woman who was always working. She was always focused on taking care of her family and her home. On the other hand, Mary was a woman who loved to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from Him. She was more interested in spiritual things than earthly things.
Despite their differences, both Mary and Martha played important roles in the ministry of Jesus. Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and took care of His physical needs. Mary listened to His teaching and soaked up His wisdom like a sponge. Both women had an important part to play in the life of Christ.
Reflection and Meaning of Martha and Mary for Christians Today
In the book of Luke, Jesus is traveling with his disciples when he comes to the home of two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha is busy cooking and cleaning, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to him teach. When Martha complains that her sister isn’t helping her with the work, Jesus tells her that she is worrying about the wrong things. He says that Mary has chosen the better path, and that she is not to be disturbed. This story provides an important lesson about what is truly important in life. Too often, we get caught up in the busyness of our lives and forget to make time for what truly matters. We forget to slow down and listen to God’s voice. The next time you find yourself feeling frazzled and overwhelmed, take a moment to reflect on this story. Remember that it is more important to focus on your relationship with God than it is to worry about all of the things you have to do. Make time to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to what he has to say. It will be worth it, I promise.
So what can we learn from these two women? The first thing that we see is that both women were important to Jesus. He loved them both and valued their contributions. We also see that each woman had her own unique gifts and talents. Martha was gifted in hospitality and service, while Mary was gifted in discipleship and teaching.
Finally, we see that both women had an intense love for Jesus. They both followed Him wholeheartedly and were eager to learn from Him. No matter what our gifts and talents may be, we can all follow the example of Mary and Martha by loving Jesus with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
